Indian Bank is based in Chennai and it is one of the major commercial banks in India. At present, the bank has over 22,000 employees working in about 1,750 branches of the bank. The bank was established on 15th August 1907, as a part of the Swadeshi Movement. During its early expansion, Indian Bank opened branches in major cities populated by important Chettiar. In 1932, the bank opened its first international branch in Colombo another in Jaffna in 1935. The Jaffna branch closed down in 1939 due to several circumstances prevailing inside the bank.
